Bio:
Linda Steider is a studio artist working with a variety of media. She has a twenty year background in fiber; has painted with pastels since high school; and now mainly works with kiln-formed glass.
Early influences include her upbringing in Toppenish Washington, near the Yakama Indian Reservation; and after a familiy move to Glendale California, the aura of "Hollywood". Although an unlikely combination, both Native
American culture and the glittery glitz of Hollywood leave their mark on her work. A summer in Europe at the tender age of seventeen sealed her desire to create art.
Steider's award winning work has been shown nationally and internationlly, and can currently be seen at the Columbia Art Gallery, Hood River, OR; The Dalles Art Center, The Dalles, OR; Mt. Hood Glass Works, Mt. Hood, OR; Natural Spaces, and Fireborn Gallery, Portland, OR; and Firehouse No. 12 in Vancouver, WA. Upcoming events include Best of the
Northwest, Portlan, OR; The Columbia Gorge Art Show, Corbett, OR; Glass Gallery at the Convention Center, Portland, OR; The Trount Lake Art Festival, Trout Lake, WA; and the Hood River Harvest Festival, Hood River, OR.
She enjoys an inspirational view of the Columbia Gorge from her home and studio on the rim of Burdoin Mountain, just outside White Salmon, WA. She and her husband, Sam, share their home with an assortment of animals.
Artist Statement:
I have always loved glass. It didn't occur to me that I could work with it as a medium until a friend introduced me to warm glass about 6 years ago. Abandoning fiber, after 20 years in that field, warm glass is now firmly established in my studio. Color is an essential part of my work, as is having fun with this versatile medium.
Rather than stating my intention for each piece or series, I find it fascinating to let the viewers dreive their own meaning, based on their life experience. This can sometimes be different from my intended portrayal, but serves as a reminder of how we all see the same circumstance differently.
